What’s the Point of Earwax?

Earwax often gets a bad rap, but it’s actually an unsung hero of your ear health. Produced by tiny glands in the outer ear canal, earwax is your body’s natural protector. It works diligently to moisturize the skin and trap unwelcome dust, dirt, and bacteria. Its natural antimicrobial properties help keep harmful microbes at bay.

It’s an ingenious system: Everyday actions like chewing or talking gently guide old wax out of your ear, where it naturally dries and flakes away. Without this “sticky” guardian, your ear canals would feel dry, itchy, and vulnerable.

When Earwax Becomes a Problem

While your ears are usually quite efficient at managing earwax on their own, there are times when the system gets a little overwhelmed. Sometimes, your glands might produce more wax than your body can naturally clear, or the wax can become hardened and trapped, leading to a blockage. This is more common than many people realize.

Several factors can increase the likelihood of earwax buildup:

  • Regular use of hearing aids or earplugs
  • Having naturally narrow or curved ear canals
  • Introducing objects like cotton swabs into your ear, which can inadvertently push wax deeper

When earwax buildup becomes problematic, it can lead to various uncomfortable symptoms:

  • A feeling of fullness or pressure in your ear
  • Muffled sounds or a noticeable reduction in hearing
  • Persistent itching or drainage
  • Ringing or buzzing in your ears (tinnitus)
  • Ear pain or general discomfort
  • Occasional dizziness or balance issues

If you’re experiencing any of these signs, you don’t have to live with the discomfort. Professional earwax removal can often bring immediate relief, helping restore your comfort and the clarity of your hearing.

Safe Ear Cleaning: Do’s and Don’ts

Maintaining healthy ears involves a thoughtful, gentle approach. Here are our recommendations for safely managing earwax at home, and what to avoid.

Earwax Dos and Don'ts

Do’s for Ear Care:

  • DO gently wipe the outer ear with a soft, warm cloth after showering.
  • DO consider using a few drops of warmed olive oil, almond oil, or an approved ear-softening solution to help naturally loosen wax.
  • DO attempt a gentle water rinse or irrigation only if advised and guided by a hearing care professional.

Don’ts for Ear Care:

  • DON’T insert cotton swabs, hairpins, keys, or any other objects into your ear canal. This can push wax deeper, compact it, or even cause serious injury to your delicate ear structures.
  • DON’T try ear candling. This method is not supported by evidence as effective and carries significant risks of burns or ear damage.
